Trekking poles are like Marmite sandwiches, either you love them or you hate them. Many first time users are skeptical as to the usefulness of trekking poles and ask themselves whether they are just another gadget or if they will make the hiking experience more enjoyable? Initially you may find the poles get entangled in the undergrowth and that not having instant use of your hands is inconvenient.
Trekking poles are however an acquired taste. Over months of regular use, most hikers find they become a must on any hike.
Trekking poles tend to improve balance over uneven terrain and can decrease knee strain. Use trekking poles uphill to decrease the weight placed on the supporting leg. On steep gradients, plant the pole adjacent to the supporting leg. When planting the poles in this way, leg joints and lower back should feel less strained. Downhill slopes cause the most stress and strain on knees, owing to the impact of the bodyweight on the leading knee. This strain is exacerbated when the hiker is carrying a heavy pack. When hiking downhill, plant the pole adjacent to the lead leg before your foot touches the ground. This takes a little practice but should decrease the impact of your body weight on the knee.
